there are various words, and songs, and faces that haunt me. not in the petrifying, scary, get-me-out-of-here way. they are my ghosts, and they hang from my limbs like rotten balloons. sometimes they obstruct my path; i cant get past them, or through them. they just lie there, ogling at me. as if i could touch them, manipulate the way they look and feel. in the middle of the night, sometimes ill wake up and immediately have a song playing in my head out of nowhere. as if my pillow had been a radio and my mind was repeating what it had just awoken from hearing. or ill be daydreaming on my way to school, and a face will be floating lucidly in front of me, blurring my view. sometimes i cant get a word out of my head and continuously find myself repeating it until i become preoccupied or distracted.

i like the sensation of haunt. eerie things that cant really be explained evoke so much of my time everyday. i think most of it muddies up my brain because i cannot yet expel it anywhere. i suppose i should be searching for my outlet.

Wolves in the Canyon

During snow storms it is always the most quiet.
Sometimes as a child I would leave my bed
to walk out in the white padded dark
and sit at the canyon's edge, tucked neat
amongst the lacy shelter of tangled willows.

The voice of one wolf can split itself so that it sounds like
the voice of three,
so a small pack of wolves sounds like the most lonesome
chorus.
Sitting out at the canyon's edge,
looking out upon the still strange landscape of winter,
I knew their song.
I felt it deep in my belly.
Sometimes I was sick with it,
so heavy was it in me that all I could do
was open my mouth and let it call out.
It was instantly my comfort.
My own treasure harbored somewhere
behind my lungs, inside my heart.
It was the song of my soul, I imagined,
and I would lend it to the wolves
and sing with them in the still of midnight,
while my brothers lay sleeping,
beneath thick blankets of dreaming.

this time i was younger, maybe 9. i was wearing hand-me-down shirts from my brother, and running through the forest's ground cover of dead leaves. i kept climbing trees, hopping rocks across the creek, yelling and laughing at the top of my lungs. my friend was there, though i dont know him in real life, and we found a picture of us that was absolutely amazing: it was taken from below, and we were in a tree. but the branches of the tree jetted out perfectly parallel to the ground, and very close to one another (much like a raft made of logs, though with spaces between the logs) and we were lying across them and looking down into the camera. the tree had hundreds of leaves, we were surrounded by green. but you could just make out our tiny smiling faces, and our toes dangling down. then the dream became lucid; i was so excited to have found this masterful gem, and became so eager to show my friends and family in real life that i actually woke up.

everyday I notice the quaint 1970s homes that line the streets of my city. their colors and their fences and their gardens are always interesting to me, because they vary so greatly. but this morning I noticed something new: a particular house I had never previously paid any attention to. it is darkly shaded; the front is enclosed by trees and shrubbery, and thick power lines hang heavy over the backyard. an uninteresting house, mostly. except for the powerlines. out of the miles and miles of power lines I drive past every day, on this particular street, the pigeons have chosen the three wires over this home. there were so many of them clustered next to each other, just waking from their nights rest, looking around and stretching their wings. but the best part about it was the fact that there had to be thirty pigeons, and out of all of the grey, a lone white pigeon was perched in the immediate center. perhaps the flock finds a need to honor this contrasting anomaly. I think would, too.

illuminary ideals

holiday lights hung upon houses this time of year are so complementary to the night. but we shouldn't have to wait until the holiday season before hanging them up.

when a strand of lights is hung really taught against the roofline on a house, it is a decorative thing, yes. but it is also acknowledgment of architecture, something we can't always see well at night. the illumination lets us know shapes, sizes, contours. it reminds us of our surroundings.

spiraling lights going up the trunk of a tree and loosely surrounding its branches, this is celebration of natural form. during the day we see the organic forms, we are used to this. but at night, trees are silhouettes. and though sometimes this can be a beautiful thing, it is also beautiful to see trees accented with illumination in a modern design. we should always be this excited to celebrate our surroundings.

the idea of electric gingerbread houses is nice, though.
